Oliver Townend and Note Worthy are the overnight leaders in the CIC3* ERM British Open at the Gatcombe Festival of British Eventing. Townend won the inaugural event at Gatcombe last year and is looking to repeat that in 2017.
Sir Mark Todd produced a solid test on the big moving Kiltubrid Rhapsody to score 42.50 and sits in 7th place. “I was really pleased with him for where he is at the moment being a 10 year old and still fairly new at this level” Said Todd, “We are in with a squeak so we’ll just have to see”.
Tim Price and his Badminton mount Xavier Faer are sitting on 10th position on a score of 43.30 which Price was pleased with considering the big atmosphere of Gatcombe.
“It’s a competitive score but there will be some who will go into the low 30’s, which is expected in a prestigious class like this” said Price “He is a great horse and I am looking forward to the next two phases to see what has to come”
In the end only 2 riders scored sub 40 dressage scores and there is one showjump fence separating the top 8, so there is still plenty to ride for. The Showjumping gets under at 9.00pm Sunday NZ time followed by the cross country at 1.00am Monday morning.
In the other Festival of British Eventing Championship classes, James Avery lost his overnight lead after incurring 22 time penalties on cross country to finish in 16th with Zazu. Dan Jocelyn climbed up the leader board with Blackthorn Cruise to finish in 6th place and Tim Price and Kindred Spirit completed their competition in 33rd.
