There’s a certain synergy between ESNZ high performance sponsors Racing Blue and the riders.

Technical director Dr Catherine Dunnett says she feels both have a real connection.

“We are a company with a product created with a solid science background, and we hope that we have integrity and credibility,” says Dunnett. “We are driven to make a difference by utilising our technical knowledge to the best effect for our clients, which goes much further than just providing a supplement.”

“New Zealand eventing feel like they have that kind of approach too . . . they have a solid base of talent and are interested in bringing the best out of their riders and horses. They too aim to leave no stone unturned in the quest for those small marginal gains, that all add up to make a significant difference.”

Racing Blue is in its fifth season of sponsorship with Eventing Team New Zealand. Initially the introduction came through a former team vet, who thought the company’s product STORM® may offer a potential competitive edge for the team.

There was also an existing relationship between Racing Blue’s sister company Independent Equine Nutrition (IEN) having done nutritional consultancy for team management in the past, and in particular in helping eventer Jock Paget clear his name.

“They were just amazing,” said Paget. “They were crucial to us finding and tracing the contamination. The team worked really hard and were efficient and so knowledgeable. They found the contamination, traced it back and that led to our exoneration.”

IEN are now also working alongside ESNZ Endurance High Performance Squads with nutritional advice. The Racing Blue team do venture out to watch their sponsored riders compete, and have seen them go at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, Land Rover Burghley and Houghton Hall.

The New Zealand sponsors and owners tent at Badminton was a big hit. “We really enjoyed visiting the ESNZ marquee by the lake. It was a great backdrop and it was lovely to catch up with everyone,” says Dunnett, who loves nothing more than to escape her technically-based work by getting out on a horse.

“They are a great mix of people. They are really down to earth and friendly, even though they are real superstars at the top of their tree and are easy to work with and are very appreciative. For a small company like ours, we are so pleased they like our product and feel it brings value to their performance.”

STORM is one of those key products, and it continues to be a product of choice for the team. “I think the team see STORM and the technical backup we can provide on nutrition and analysis as an advantage, which forms part of their strategy of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

The product is readily available in the UK, and more lately in Australia and New Zealand through Mitavite.

STORM helps fight muscle fatigue by delaying the muscle acidosis triggered during the build-up of hydrogen ions released from lactic acid and other biochemical processes during intense exercise. “So it helps to support athletic performance in key areas such as speed, strength and stamina,” says Dunnett.

It also helps support muscle recovery and repair following strenuous exercise.

The ingredients for the company’s performance horse supplements are chosen specifically for their quality and efficacy, from fully traceable sources.  Each and every batch of ingredients and finished product in the Racing Blue’s range is screened for specific prohibited substances prior to sale to ensure suitability for horses competing under FEI or racing rules.

The STORM range includes product for horses, dogs, camels and birds.
