Growing up in Kenya, Debbie Barke was never allowed to have her own pony, but did head to riding school once a week where her passion for all things equestrian grew. Later she achieved her British Horse Society teaching and instructors qualifications, along with a college diploma and degree. While earning her degree she was competing two eventers and lecturing in equine studies at the college.

Barke headed back to Kenya where she did freelance training and teaching, working particularly with race horses. Then it was on to Germany to work for Nadine Capellmann who has twice been part of the Olympic gold medal-winning dressage team (2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing), along with an individual gold at World Champs (2002) and six gold medal winning teams at worlds and European champs.

She has been heavily involved with para-equestrian and went to the Atlanta Olympics with the British team, trained the team for the World Champs in Denmark in 1998 and for the Sydney Olympics in 2000 was one of two trainers with the team. She was later honoured for her work with the British riders.

She made the move from eventing to dressage around 1998 after discovering she wasn’t really brave enough for it. She thrives on training horses, chasing perfection in every move. Barke has ridden for New Zealand at the FEI World Challenge.

She credits her trainer Jeremy Steinberg for much of her success with Lucrative SW.
