Jenny Champion grew up riding but didn’t take up endurance until she was 22 years old. Since then the farm worker from the Wairarapa has won eight buckles with Freckles – two of those as New Zealand National Endurance Champion (2006 and 2008) – and three with Barack Obama – 2015 160km North Island Champion, 2017 160km North Island Champion and third in the 2017 New Zealand National Championships.

Her foray into endurance started with competitive trail riding – which she still does as she considers it great training for horses. The highlight of her long career was winning her first 160km national title. “You think to yourself you will never get to win it, so when you do it is quite emotional.”

She’s done 11 160kms to date and says with each come new lessons and greater skills.

Champion has been riding Barack Obama since 2014. The combination won their first outing and have gone from strength to strength since.

She and partner Shane Dougan – who is also an endurance competitor – own Tararua Arabian Stud where they breed for the sport. Also in the brood mare paddock is Freckles, Champion’s superstar who retired after 17 years of competition.
