Kiwi eventers and a single dressage riders are chasing top honours at CHIO Aachen this week.

Tim Price with his youngster Jarillo, Jonelle Price and Senor Crocodillo, Caroline Powell aboard CBI Aldo and Ginny Thomasen on Capitaine De Hus Z will compete as a Nations’ Cup team as well as individuals in the SAP Cup CCIO4*-S, with Lauren Innes aboard Global Vision M are lining up as an individual. Tim, Jonelle and Caroline have just been named in the team for the Paris Olympic Games.

Tim is excited for another outing with his 10-year-old. “He is just a great horse who keeps getting better and better,” says Tim. “This is a bit of a step up in terms of atmosphere and a little bit of team pressure for him.” Aachen is a place everyone always wanted to do well at. “Hopefully we go and put a good team score (up) and my young horse Jarillo has a good experience that will help steer him in the direction of more team representation in years to come.”

The Kiwis will be against teams from Australia, France, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and the United States. Hosts Germany are the defending champs, with Brit Yasmin Ingham and Banzai du Loir the most recent individual champs. Since 2007 New Zealand has only once won the SAP-Cup for the Nations’ Cup, and that was in 2018. The Germans have won it 11 times, the British have been the victors three times and Australia just once. Individually, Andrew Nicholson and Nereo are the only Kiwis to have won (2010). The SAP-Cup CCIO4*-S eventing has both the dressage and showjumping on Friday (July 5) with the cross country the following day.

Newly named Olympian Melissa Galloway and Windermere J’Obei W is using the CDI4* dressage as a dress rehearsal for Paris.

“Joey is feeling in the best shape he has felt since being here this time,” said Melissa. “I think it has been quite a big transition for him coming over in the middle of our summer to the European winter. It has taken a little time for him to adjust and for his coat to come right to feel like his normal self but I really feel he is picking back up to his old self.” She’s super excited to return to Aachen. “It is one of the best outdoor competitions in the world. Joey really enjoys the main arena so I am very excited to go out and put our best foot forward and enjoy every minute of it.”

The dressage gets underway on Wednesday (July 3) with the CDI4* Grand Prix with the Special on Friday and Freestyle on Saturday.

CHIO Aachen holds a very special place on the international calendar and the only German event that allows Nations’ Cup competitions, which it holds across showjumping, dressage, eventing, driving and vaulting. Tickets to the event are always in hot demand, and particularly for the main stadium which holds 40,000 people.
This year there are 330 participants, covering riders, drivers and vaulters, from 32 countries, competing on 600 horses. Around 350,000 spectators are expected over the event.

It costs around 20 million Euros to put on CHIO Aachen, with a combined prize purse of 3.9 million Euros. There will be 600 accredited journalists and photographers there, 65 FEI judges and officials, 45 FEI stewards and 330 ground stewards. There is no shortage of shopping and other things to look at either with 200 exhibitors in the Aachen Village.
